Description
Berberis aristata an erect, spinous, deciduous shrub, usually 1.8-3.6 m in height found in Himalayan ranges at an elevation of 1000-3000 m, and in the Nilgiri hills in South India, Nepal, Bhutan. It is also naturally found in the west zone of Sri Lanka.
Daruharidra / Daruhaldi also known as Indian berberry or Tree Turmeric. Its botanical name is Berberis aristata. It has been used in Ayurveda for centuries. The fruit and stem of Daruharidra are widely used for its medicinal benefits. The fruit is edible and is a rich source of vitamin C.
Daruharidra is mainly beneficial for skin problems like inflammation and psoriasis as it has anti-inflammatory and anti-psoriatic activity. It helps in managing acne by preventing the growth of acne causing bacteria and reducing inflammation due to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
According to Ayurveda, applying a paste of Daruharidra powder along with honey or rose water on the skin helps in faster healing due to its Ropan (healing) property. Daruharidra might help to protect the liver and prevent liver disorders as it maintains the level of liver enzymes. It also protects the liver cells against damage caused by free radicals as it has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective activities.
It is also recommended for diarrhea as it prevents the growth of microorganisms responsible for diarrhea due to its antimicrobial activity.
Daruharidra is beneficial for managing blood sugar levels by increasing the metabolism of glucose and preventing further formation of glucose. It also lowers the bad cholesterol levels in the body and helps in weight management by inhibiting the formation of fat cells in the body. This is mainly due to the active constituent berberine present in Daruharidra which has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Suggested Dosage:1g powder twice daily with honey or warm water.
Phytoconstituents
Alkaloids contains berberine, quaternary ammonium salt of isoquinoline alkaloid. The fruit contains 0.64 per cent tannins and 0.37 per cent pectin. Its vitamin C content is only 4.60 mg per 100 ml of juice.
